Ways to Stay Warm this Winter

Normally, when we start to feel the weather going cold, we turn up the thermostat. And yet, there are other ways to stay warm during the winter aside from super-heating. Try these simple steps to keep you and your Honolulu home warm and cozy throughout the coldest season of the year.

Dress in Layers

To keep the cold at bay, use layers of clothing correctly. Significantly so when you’re going to be moving to and from indoors and outdoors. To keep yourself warm but not overheated while indoors, start with a light layer of wicking fabric first. Then, add layers until you are warm and comfortable. A few things you can consider for your top are shirts, sweaters, jackets, and coats; flannel-lined pants are great for bottoms! And don’t forget a hat, scarf, and socks! To keep your head, neck, and feet warm is to keep the rest of your body even warmer and more comfortable.

Winterize Your Home

If there are chilly blasts of air inside your house every now and then, it would be a good idea to check and seal the more common areas where drafts and air leaks occur. Multiple air leaks come from gaps around doors and windows. Try adding some caulking around the frame or replace the weather-stripping around the door frame. These two are extremely helpful. If you notice a draft getting in beneath your doors, try making use of a rolled towel or blanket to block it. Thermal curtains, soft rugs, and other fabrics can also help alleviate cold spots and keep your home warmer.

Furnace Maintenance

If it’s been a while since your furnace had a check-up, you should definitely schedule a professional to drop by and look at it. Your household needs to be kept in shape. In the same manner, your furnace needs regular maintenance to keep it running efficiently. Your heating system will eventually wear out and will work harder to maintain a consistent temperature. But with regular furnace maintenance, you can keep your system in good shape while keeping your energy costs low. One way to do this is to regularly change filters.

Use a Humidifier

If your area’s winter months are mainly cold and dry, a humidifier inside your home can help you stay warm. Dry air usually feels much colder than air with humidity. Cold, dry air also tends to leave your skin and hair feeling rough and dehydrated. A humidifier will help keep moisture in your air. While getting a whole-house humidifier is great, it’s not necessary. Simply getting a low-cost humidifier for frequently used rooms or even boiling a pot of water on the stove can help make the air in your home feel warmer and more comfortable.

Stay Active

The best way to get warmed up is to move around. The first thing we think of during the cold is to stay in and underneath multiple layers of blankets. Unfortunately, there are better ways to stay warm. Staying active leads to increased body temperature, which leads to a warmer body. Regularly exercising will keep you warm and healthy because it helps build muscle and improves blood flow. But even activities like cleaning, playing an interactive game, or other types of movement can do the trick. Look for active routines to integrate into your daily routine to keep yourself warm throughout winter.
